WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF SOMEONE IS CHOKING?
- Can the casualty cough?
- If they are unable to cough ask them to lean forward
- Using the heal of the hand give 5 back blows
- If the casualty is still choking perform 5 abdominal thrusts
- Repeat the cycle until the choke is removed
IF THE CASUALTY BECOMES UNCONSCIOUS AND STOPS BREATHING PERFORM CPR AND REQUEST A DEFIBRILLATOR
If abdominal thrusts have been given the casualty MUST go to hospital.
SEVERE OR MILD?
Mild choke:
- Can cough
- Can speak
Severe choke:
- Cannot cough
- Cannot speak
- Sweating
- Panic stricken
