WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF SOMEONE IS CHOKING?

  • Can the casualty cough?
  • If they are unable to cough ask them to lean forward
  • Using the heal of the hand give 5 back blows
  • If the casualty is still choking perform 5 abdominal thrusts
  • Repeat the cycle until the choke is removed

IF THE CASUALTY BECOMES UNCONSCIOUS AND STOPS BREATHING PERFORM CPR AND REQUEST A DEFIBRILLATOR

If abdominal thrusts have been given the casualty MUST go to hospital.

SEVERE OR MILD?

Mild choke:

  • Can cough
  • Can speak

Severe choke:

  • Cannot cough
  • Cannot speak
  • Sweating
  • Panic stricken
